Amino acids are both the building blocks of our muscles and the building blocks of all proteins. There are 20 amino acids in our diet, 12 of which the body can synthesise itself. The remaining 8 (Leucine, Isoleucine, Valine, Lysine, Phenylalanine, Threonine, Histidine and Methionine) are not produced by our body. However, these are crucial for a properly functioning body and are known as 'essential amino acids'. We therefore need to either get these from our diet or get them through supplements.
